HAWERA.
(from oou own correspondent.) December 28. The elections held for the purpose of returning three members to represent the Hawera Riding in the Patea County Council, came off on Wednesday last, and resulted in thereturn of Messrs Middlemas, Winks, and Livingstone. The result of the poll
was - considered by many as a foregone conclusion for the above-named gentlemen, but Mr Davidson had the hearty support of an influential portion of the electors. Expresses, decorated with bunting, plied ■'between Normanby, Ketemarao and Hawera during the day, and did good service in bringing electors to the polling booth, and conveying them home again after the declaration of the poll. The utmost harmony prevailed throughout the day, and I am pleased to be able to record that no disturbance of an}' kind took place. It is to be hoped that the three gentlemen elected will take a prominent part in -lie future proceedings of the Council, and endeavor to do their utmost to promote the advancement of this riding, and consequently justify the trust so unanimously confided to them by the electors. I hope that one of them will be elected to fill the office of Chairman to the Council.
Another meeting was held on Wednesday last with regard to the introduction of. a medical gentleman into Hawera, at which over forty persons put in an appearance. Several resolutions were carried, and many matters pertaining to the advent of a duly qualified gentleman were discussed and enlarged upon. A working committee was appointed, consisting of the following gentlemen :—Messrs Cooper, Livingstone, Davidson, Hunter, Middlomas, Nicholas, Gore, Wilson, and Winks. A meeting of the committee was subsequently hold, at which it was decided that advertisements inviting the services of a duly qualified medical gentleman be inserted in the leading papers in Auckland, Wellington, and Dunedin. Applications to be considered closed on the 15th February, 1877. Mr Bate was appointed treasurer and Mr W. H. Inman secretary to the committee. Matters being now placed on a firm footing, I trust that the time is not far distant when this township will be able to boast of a resident disciple of iEsculapius. The sports which come off here on Monday next, give promise of being of a superior description, both in prize-money and also in the number and quality of the competitors, than has hitherto been the case here. The committee are doing all they can to ensure success in their undertaking, and to make the proceedings pass off successfully. Some of the prizes are for a comparatively large sura, and are well worth winning. It is therefore to be hoped that the fine weather which we have been experiencing during the past week may last over New Year’s Day, and that old bugbear (Jupiter Pluvius), whose prerogatives I bad to complain of in a late letter, may withhold his dire attacks on the occasion in question.
