In consequence of tlic frequent call for his services in Jfawcra, Hr Walker lias louiul it necessary to establish a surgery there. In anothci portion of the paper an advertisement appears calling for tenders for a building for the purpose. The amateur performance, announced lor lad night, came off accordingly and was very successful in every respect. The trapeze performances of Messrs Adamson and McCoy, were especially good. A serious accident, occurred on Monday (Christmas Day) to a well-known half-caste, George Broughton. Ho and three others started from the Whemiakurahotel for a race, but by some means he got a nasty fall, blood gm-hing out of his ears, eyes, and mouth. He was speedily picked up and drenched with water, after which truly Maori medical treatment was ro ;orled to, the patient being, immersed in the river by way of completing the cure. This had very nearly the effect of drowning him. but he survived notwithstanding, raid appeared yesterday at the sports with a bandaged head. The children of the Wesleyan Sunday school had their treat on Boxing Day yesterday) when no less than live dray loads proceeded to Kakaramoa, followed by another vehicle loaded with edibles. Wc have no doubt that the young excursionists fully enjoyed themselves and wc "hope, digested' the good tilings provided for them. The Sunday scholars of St. George’s school (Church of .England) wilt have their annual treat on Friday next, at 2 o’clock, the Government Paddock being the scone of their fcotivily.
A notification reached Mr Sherwood yesterday, as to his being appointed one of the members of the newly constituted Harbour Board. The sooner the Harbour Board get to work the better.
Some trouble has been occasioned to oar ITawera neighbors, through a difficulty' in getting ground for " tilting in the ring. ’ The consequence is that the event is left open for the present, and it may' be doubtful whether-it will come off or not. All the other programme will however, certainly come off, and a very large attendance at the sports is confidently expected. Atthc-li.M., Court yesterday an unfortunate who. had been keeping up Christmas, not wisely', but too well, was brought up as an inebriate. It seemed that he had been picked up on tho road by the police, iu such a state of helplessness that lie had to be wheelbamnved home to tho lock-up. He had been in custody' for some forty hours and Dr Croft, who occupied the Bench therefore let him off with a caution. We beg to call the attention of our readers to the sale of stock by Mr W. Dale at the Agricultural Association’s yards at Kakaramoa on Friday next. There will be about seventy, head of mixed store cattle offered, in addition to horses of various descriptions. The sale of the SOO sheep previously advertised is temporarily postponed. V.'c remind our readers that entries for sale will be received till date.
