It is a little startling to be told that a journal so very advanced in theological matters as the Scotsman is about to be edited by a clergyman. There was no paper of the first rank more anticlerical than the Scotsman under the editorship of Mr Alex. Russell. But we may be quite sure that in this case Mahomet goes to the mountain, not the mountain to Mahomet. In point of fact Dr. Wallace has written to the Presbytery of Edinburgh, not only resigning his charge, but also remitting his "orders. Dr. Wallace is in his 46th year. He was educated at the High School, Edinburgh, and the Universities of St, Andrew’s and Edinburgh. He was appointed minister of Newton-upon-Ayr in 1857 ; minister of Trinity College Church in Edinburgh, in 1860 ; and of old Greyfriars in 1868. He became successively examiner in philosophy at St. Andrews and professor, of divinity and church history at Edinburgh. He was made D.D. of Glasgow University in 1869. Our late Governor, Sir James Fergusson, is spoken of by Scotch papers as a likely candidate for the representation in Parliament of the Glasgow and Aberdeen Universities, vacant by the elevation of Lord-Advocate Gordon to.the Appellate Court. ■'
