At the District Court, Oarnaru, lately, Judge Ward admitted the claim of the editor of a paper to exemption from serving on a jury, and stated that it had always been his practice to excuse editors. A correspondent (says the Jewish World) writes from Syria, that about 12,000 inhabitants of the city and suburbs of Damascus have been carried off by cholera during the last three months. A Mr W. Page, the wealthiest settler in Takaka, has married “ Lucj’-,” the Maori widow of the late Chief Pirimona. There is grief and tribulation amongst the white widows of Takaka. The bight Rev. Dr Abraham, formerly Bishop of Wellington, New Zealand, has been appointed to*a candnry and precentorship in Lichfield Cathedral. Another New Zealand bishop, Dr Hobhoase, of Nelson, is to be Archdeacon of Staffordshire in the same diocese.
