HAWERA-WAIHI Y. CARLYLE. The return match between these two clubs came off on Saturday last, on the ground of the former at Waihi, and proved a much closer contest than might have been expected, the » home” team being defeated by 15 runs. The match commenced about half-past 10 o’clock by.the Hawera team assuming the defensive at the wickets, being represented by Messrs Bate and Lysaght, to the bowling of Messrs Fraser and Fetch. The two batsmen, however, soon succumbed; and gave way to G. Bayly and Cowan. The former player succeeded in obtaining by careful play 17

runs, being the highest score on his side in that innings, Riddiford taking second place with 10-i;uns. ; dl'he bowling ot ptfye Fatea team was very good throughout, the innings and the fielding very fair, with one or two exceptions.’ ■ We' draw special .attention to a catch made by Fetch at cover point, be which he, secured Bayly’s wicket. The innings closed for 43 runs. The representatives of Carlyle, had every prospect of topping this score, it being the lowest made-in any previoustnatch during the prcseut season ; but, as it turned out, such was not to be the case, as, with the exception of Jacomb, who made the splendid score of 32 (not out), uo other member of the team managed to make anything like a score. Had it not been for Jacomb’s good play, we should have been almost ashamed to chronicle such a poor innings, as only nine runs out of the sum total of 41 were made by the remainder _ of the team. The bowling of Messrs Riddiford and Helps proved effective, but was not up their best form. Hawera began their second inning's with two runs to the good, and their team made a much better stand than in their first innings. Messrs Helps, Riddiford, and F. Bayly all managed to score by good double figures, the innings of Bayly for 20 being especially deserving of praise. The fielding of_ the Patea team was very good in this innings, no catches or chances being missed. The innings closed for 78 runs, leaving Patea 81 runs to obtain to win the match, winch, however, they did not succeed in getting. 0. Dasent, Fetch, and Fraser were the principal scorers in the second innings, making 11, 18, and 9 respectively Fetch was caught out magnificently by Riddiford who received a well-merited round of applause for the catch. The innings closed for Go runs, thus leaving the Hawera team winners by 15 runs. We are glad to say that the utmost harmony existed between the teams throughout the day, and everything went as “ merry as a marriage bell.” The creature comforts were everything that could be desired, and unlimited refreshments were provided for the cricketers and visitors. Tha umpires (Messrs Norcroft and Anderson), and the- Messrs H urrell and Lucas, performed their duties to the entire satisfaction .of all parties concerned." The proceedings of the day terminated with the usual hearty cheers from the representatives of the respective teams.
