CRICKET.
The Match, “ Union Club,” Wanganui, versus “ Patea Club,” came ofl: on Saturday. The day was not a very good one for cricket, the high wind making it very hard on the bowlers. We regret to have to record the complete discomfiture of our local team. The pluck, however, witli which it played a very up-hill game, and the good temper manifested throughout the day, elicited from their visitors very Uattering comment, and doubtless leaves an impression that their country opponents were much more redoubtable antagonists than the result of the match (scores appended) would imply them to be. There is no disguising the fact (and our cricketers are quite alive to it) that Wanganui had entrusted their cricketing reputation to a team with which our small club could not hope to compete with much chance of success. Some of their number treated us to a good, and one especially (Mr Farrington) to a brilliant display of batting, and it was in this particular that the Patea Club showed inferiority. In the evening the rival teams met at dinner under Mr Odgers’ hospitable roof, —when the good things there provided (and they were good) were done ample justice to, and that happy frame of mind arrived at, which a good dinner is so potent to ensure. A limited number of loyal and friendly toasts were disposed of, —a few capital songs wore given, and at nine p.m. a most enjoyable day and evening concluded with the National Anthem. The visitors left for Wanganui immediately after, amid hearty cheers from their antagonists of the day, and their hosts of the evening. Well merited encomiums were passed on the umpires, for the impartiality of their decisions, and their undoubted knowledge of the game. The following is the score : Wanganui. Ist Innings, 2nd Innings.
