PATEA V. HAWERA-WAIHL This matcli came off last Saturday, and, contrary to expectation, ended in another victory for the Patea team. At the onset the weather promised to be fine, but during the day rain fell at intervals, and to a great extent tendered to damp the ardour of both fielders and bowlers. The HaweraWaihi team “ rolled up” punctually to time, and after some dispute as to whether Kilgour should be allowed to play with the Patea team or not (he being an honorary member of their club), the usual preliminaries were arranged, and the match commenced by the Hawera-Waihi team taking the defensive, they being represented at the wickets by Messrs Bate and Lucas, the former of whom made a good stand against the efforts of Messrs Fraser and Jacomb (who were bowling well) to displace him. Runs, however, were not freely forthcoming until Helps took his stand at the wickets, who, together with Johnston, shared the honor of getting double figures. GL Bayly (who was well caught at cover point by Inman), for a well played innings of 7, and Kenny, fora steady defensive not out innings of 8, also did good service for their side. The innings closed for 62 runs. Patea then took the wickets, being represented by C. Dasent and Nicholson, who were shortly followed by Tennant, who with his usual steady and careful play, managed to score 13 runs. Jacornb was the only other member of the team who arrived at double figures ; but Dr. Croft played well for his 7, not out. The innings closed for 51, leaving Carlyle 11 runs behind. “Leg before wicket” sent two of the Patea team from the scene of active play for “ duck’s eggs.” The bowling of Helps and Bayly (who was suffering from a bad shoulder) proved effective for their team The second innings of the Hawera team closed for 48 runs, Cowan with 14, making the only fair score. Carlyle entered on their second innings, having 60 runs to obtain to win, the match. The match at this juncture appeared lobe a very close one. However owing to a decided stand on the part of Tennent and Inman, who went in first, and a contribution of 8 from Nicholson, the local team won the match by five wickets. The fielding was good on both sides, and the bowling effective, but we hope to see the batting improve as the season advances. One remark we would make with reference to future matches-r—----namely, that it would, tend to create a

better feelingbetween guests and strangers, if the former, together with their friends (whether cricketers or otherwise) would refrain from making audible comments on the playmof the latter, which cannot be taken in any other way than as derogatory and.almost abusive inuendos.
