[Per Press Agency.] WELLINGTON. November 4. The nominations for the Derby and Wellington Cup were received last evening. The following are for the Derby .-—Dead Heat, Armada, Snowdon colt, Princess Louise, Fanny Fisher colt, Danebury, Fallacy, Maroro, and Stirabout. The following are the nominations for the Cup :—Raupo, Snowdon colt, Armada, Fishhook, Treason, Tambourini, Glcnavy, Tara, Flora M l Donald, Princess Mary, Deadbeat, Gillie Galium, Morning Star, Stangban, Nero, Doncaster, Fanny Fisher colt, Kingfisher, Izaak Walton, Templeton, Tadmor, Follefarine, Elfin, King Ariel, Guy Fawkes, Tara, Cloth of Gold, Fallacy and Danebury.
The prize-firing rules for next year will be issued this morning. The firing for colonial prizes takes place at Hokitika in February. For the choice of representatives there is no minimum, the highest scorer in matches the same as last year to be representatives, and “ extra” men are limited to the same number as the Government men from each district... The representatives are to be selected before the sth January. The cavalry, artillery, and naval brigades fire with carbines, and engineers and riflemen with rifles. New carbines and rifles will be issued to qualify men directly after the preliminary firing, to be returned into store after the colonial meeting. . There will be six matches each for the carbine and rifle belts, and also the North and South match, with the marksmen’s and moving target matches. The all-comers match will be open to any weapon. For the district prizes amounts only are set apart for each place, the number of prizes and conditions to bo decided by local boards of .. officers. The Armed Constabulary, Cadet, and Ordinance
matches are the same as last year. In the general rules “any position” is allowed throughout. - r . November 7.
The Patea Education Board is appointed to meet at 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 13th, at the office of the Board of Education, Carlyle. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency circular, Sept. 21st reports : Wool arrivals to date, 144,430 bales, and will probably be increased to 170,000. In addition to 30,000 bales withdrawn from last sales. Fair extent of private enquiry, principally from Continent. Tallow : P. I. new, 47s 3d ; Australian mutton, fine, 44s 6d to 45s 6d ; medium, 43s 6d to 445. Australian Beef : fine, 43s to 43s 6d ; medium, 41s 6d tp 42s 6d. Preserved meats : Boiled mutton, 6 and 41b tins, fivepence halfpenny to three farthings ; two pound tins, sevenpence to sevenpence farthing. Boiled Beef, sixpence farthing to sixpence halfpenny. Corn market firmer tendency. Wheat, 45s to 47s Cd per 496ibs. Now Zealand four-and-half Consolidated, 95£ to 96 £. AUCKLAND. , November 4. There was a terrific whirlwind yesterday at Cox’s Creek, which struck Wainock Bros, soap and candle factory—loo feet long by 30 feet wide—and drove both walls out, scattering the weatherboards and roofing far and wide. The blocks en which the building stood were knocked out of positiop, 1 and the boards and bricks carried a considerable distance, and the brick stack knocked down. James Warnock and one .of the workmen in the factory were both injured, the latter’s eyesight being slightly damaged from the potash which was blown into his eyes. A hut some distance oif was lifted bodily, but not destroyed. The tornado next struck Reid’s farm building, a quarter of a mile away, lifting it into the air, and carrying the fragments in all directions. Sheets of corrugated iron were carried a distance of two miles. Warnock’s loss is set down at £500,. the total damage being estimated at £I,OOO. November 7. Capt. LeVisconte Glenlora on his return Home was sentenced to three mouths for embezzlement. Debeny, dork in the Lands Office, was committed for trial on two charges of embezzlement. CHRISTCHURCH. November 4. The following acceptances for the Metropolitan meeting have been received : Free Handicap—Maroro, 3 yrs, 6st 81b ; Pungawerewere, 4 yrs, 7st 111b ; Titania, 3 yrs, 6st 51b'; Izaalc- Walton, 4 yrs, 7st 51b ; Ngaro, 5 yrs, 7st 61b ; Tadmor, 5 yrs 7st 101b. Handicap Steeplechase—Moose, G years, list 61b ; Jack, 5 years, lOst; Tommy Dodd, aged, 12st 71b ; Zetland, 5 years, lOst. The race privileges, with the exception of the cards, were sold for L 385. November 7. M. Carme, the French champion billiard player, played a game of 800 up on a French table, with Weston last night, giving the latter 400 Carme won easily. He made 93 successive canons in one break. BLENHEIM. • November 7. Terrible disclosures have been made at Picton. A man named Wooclgate, Jiving at (he mouth of Charlotte Sound, was charged with the murder of h:s illegitimate children, by his brother’s daughters, dashing out their brains against the stones as soon as they wore born.
