KEEPING UP THE STANDARD.
The proprietor of a Broadway soda fountain has had, up to a week ago, a maliciousminded young man in bis employ. A month ago, when a mah with a while necktie and solemn look entered and said lie would take pineapple syrup in his. the young man substituted brandy instead, and was rewarded by bearing the good man say, “ Keep that pineapple up to that standard and I’ll come over from Jersey at least once a day to patronise you.” He came again and again, and every time' he came lie" wiped off his chin with a tender‘motion and benign expression, and whispered that Jersey City soda fountains were over forty miles behind the times on pineapple syrup. But when he dropped in again yesterday ho found a new young man at the fountain. lie'wiped his heated brow and called for his old favorite, but, after a sip or two at the frothy beverage, be set the glass down end inquired if he didn’t order pineapple syrup; “You did, and you got it,” was the reply. , . “It carit’t bo—'can’t lie, yonng man. I have had soda water here for the last four weeks, arid the young man always drew the pineapple syrup out of that faucet up' there.” “He did; why that’s brandy!” exclaimed the boy. The good man looked at him a long time, a shade of sadness gradually stealing over bis face, amd as be put down his neckrie and went out he said, “ That .other' young man is on the high road to degradation, and yet I wonder why they .can’t make pineapple syrup with something of that upper faucet flavor to it;”
