The Go vernment will not recommend the House to agree with the amendments made in the Counties Bill b}’ the Legislative Council, but it is Imped that arrangements will be made at the conference of both Houses by which the difficulty will be overcome. The Vogel subscriptions are still coming in, so that a good round sum will be forwarded him next mail. Captain Fairchild has been placed in charge of the Ilincmoa. In the House on Saturday night, Messrs Donald lieid and DeLatour strongly remonstrated with Sir George Grey and Mr Rees, for obstructing the public business, and said they were beginning to be ashamed to belong to the Opposition. Mr iicid added that be bad endeavored during the session to act loyally by Ins party, but bad been humiliated and disgraced by the conduct of that party and its leaders. October 27. The appointment of Sir Julius Vogel to be Agent General for the Colony appears in the Gazette, the appointment dating from 9th September, 1876. CHRISTCHURCH. October 26, The Acclimatization Society this afternoon decided to send a curator to Auckland to take charge of the salmon ova to arrive by the next mail steamer. 25, trout ova will be sent as a gift to Taranaki, in place of the lot which died on their way there. ' GREYMOUTH. October 24. The -Greymonth , Coal Company, while boring, in their shaft this morning, passed through a three feet nine inch seam of coal at a depth of 570 feat.
DUNEDIN. October 24. At a mooting of the Political Association held last night, it was unanimously resolved, “ That in the opinion of this Association, should there be any doubt as to the power of his Honor the Superintendent to legally convene a meeting of the Provincial Council, his Honor should call a convention of those who are members of the Provincial Council and Assembly, the Mayors of the different Municipalities, and Chairmen of Road Boards, to advise and decide as what the future action of the province should be. It is understood that the Superintendent will act upon this advice. A largo'meeting of the members of the Young Men’s Christian Association was held last night. After a warm debate, the blackballing of the Rev. Mr Fitchctt was sustained. Oct. 25. Twenty single men, immigrants per Timaru, have been engaged at £52 per annum. A daring robbery was perpetrated on Monday night. Two men entered a house in Clarendon Street by the front door while the woman was at the back, and broke open a box and took £lB. October 20. The Superintendent has addressed letters as follows, in accordance with the request of the Political Association :—“ I have the honor to request you to be good enough to attend a meeting of the members of the House of Representatives and Provincial Council, Mayors of Municipalities. Chairmen of District Road Boards and of the Local Education Committee ; to be held in the Provincial Council Hall, Dunedin, on Wednesday, November 8, to confer and determine as to the berit means of extricating the Province of Otago from the evil results involved in the Abolition of Provinces Act. I need not say that the present is a crisis which demands the most serious attention of all earliest men who have the future welfare of the province at heart ; and I venture to hope that there will be a goodly muster of sucb at the proposed meeting, which need not occupy more than one or two days.” HOKITIKA. It is rejjorted that Mr O’Conor, the Provincial Secretary, when visiting the Karamca special settlement, got into an altercation with a squatter named Jerry O'Connor, and received a severe pummelling.
