Mr. Charles L. Garland writes as follows to the 'Budget : —“ Having noticed a paragraph in your contemporary to-day, describ ing a snake caught at .Richmond River, N.S.W., and claiming the snake (17ft. long) to be largest yet caught in Australia, I may state for general information that I have had the satisfaction of measuring a larger snake than the one referred to. ' The snake I would refer to was shot by the Manager of the Queensland Bank, on the bank of a small fiver, near Cooktown ( Endeavour River, 15 degrees, North Queensland), in Apnl, 1874, and up to that date it was claimed to be the largest captured in Australia. Its length was 22 feet 3 inches. 1 A young boa constrictor/ There is a gentleman in town who can corroborate this statement.” : There are some excellent'game birds (says the Mastefton ’News') knocking about the outskirts of the Rangitumau bush just now—geese, turkeys, and even peacocks being'amongst the number. A Juvfenilc Court of Foresters has beeu inaugurated-in- New .Plymouth, the. name of which is “ Court Robin-Hood.”
