SYDNEY. September 13. The steamer Dandenong', in going from Sydney to Melbourne,- was totally lost oil: Jervis Bay. The crew and 28 passengers arrived at Newcastle to-day in a barque. Later. Seventeen ' persons were drowned going from the Dandenong to the barque Alfred William, at 9 o’clock, on Monday night. The lights of the Dandenong were seen to disappear, and she is supposed to have foundered with forty persons. September 14. No trace has been found of the steamer Dandenong, or the rest of the passengers and crew, although a number of steamers have gone in search of her. It is supposed she foundered after the late gale, with 40 people on board. Later. All hopes of the safety of the Dandenong were abandoned to-day, tlio search proving fnritlcss.
