[Per Press Agency.] WELLINGTON. August 29. The reports which have been in circulation lately, that Mr Fitzherbert would vacate the Speaker’s chair for the purpose of assuming the position of Premier, are known to be entirely without foundation. There have been no formal proposals in the matter ; but it is understood that certain prominent representatives of Otago, Wellington, and Auckland were desirous that Mr Fitzherbert should take the Premiership, Avith the vieAv of proposing a conciliatory policy, which avouUl practically mean that the Abolition Act should be shelved another year. DUNEDIN. August 29. A large political meeting Avas held last night. Resolutions Avere passed opposed to abolition, and in favor of simplified provincial form of Government. It Avas considered that the county system Avould be expensive and cumberous, if not unAvorkable. The meeting Avas of opinion that if the Otago representatives failed to secure for that province the administration of its own land»revenue, and a satisfactory measure of local self-government,' it Avould become their duty to leave the Assembly en masse , in order that the political situation might be considered by the Provincial Council. TAUEANGA, August' 29. The Kaimai prospectors have been turned back by the Pererakaus, who threatened
violence unless they" departed. The natives told prospectors they were acting under orders from the King. It has since been ascertained that firearms were at hand concealed. Mr Brabant is inland, and nothing will be done till his return. There is a threatened intertribal disturbance at Ohincmuri between Ngatiwhakau, Ngatirdngi, and Wenehi.
