The Tuapcka Times apologises to the Eoman Catholic clergy of Dunedin for. inserting the now celebrated paragraph which originated the Star libel action. Our contemporary remarks:—“ With reference to the paragraph which appeared in our issue of July Ist, containing a rumour about a Eoman Catholic clergyman of Dunedin, we are assured that the report was utterly groundless, not having the shadow of a foundation. We therefore desire to express our deep regret at having given circulation to a report so injurious to the Eoman Catholic clergy of Dunedin, and so painful to our Eoman Catholic fellow-countrymen. We acknowledge that the paragraph was inserted rashly, and without a due sense of its seriousness, and -we beg to tender to our Eoman Catholic fellow-citizens generally and the priesthood in particular, the expression of our regret at the pain we have given, and the injustice of which we have been the instrument.” The Hon. W. Fox was a leading speaker at the recent convention of the Middlesex Good Templars, by whom a political manifesto was adopted, demanding power to prohibit the liquor traffic, and pledging themselves in the meanwhile to promote Sunday closing in England and Ireland.
