LIVELY ADVENTURE WITH A WILD BULL.
A Tali; worthy-of being told ctunes to us from the banks of the Mukakahi. Tiirco settlers weie but pig hunting, and after expending all their available shot, wore returning home with their booty. Lifting up their eyes, at no great, distance off they yaw a large bitll, which they instantly recognised as one of a mob of wild cattle known to infest the bush. On being challenged by the dbg that accompanied thong the bull faced about and took up a position on the defensive. In tins situation he managed to keep Bis antagonists at bay* who, for want of ammunition, were taken at a disadvantage Still, they were determined not to be baulked of their prize* Asa last f esotlrce# they hounded on the dbg, until he was forced to seize the bull by the Oar. In the struggle that ensued, the bitll threw his head high into the air, carrying the dog, who still kept his hold, along with him. The effort was so groat that the bull literally threw a. somersault, the twb being precipitated down, all embankment into the river. The banks on both sides being steep, neither of them could get out. They managed, however, to crawl on to a boulder hank, where they stood oyeing cadi other at a safe distance. In the meantime one of the party was despatched for a supply of ammunition —an 'errand that occupied a couple of hoars. On the gun being brought into requisition, one bullet after another was discharged into the body of the huge animal, who stood knee deep' in the water, ; Without bringing him down. It was "quite impossible an assault and battery of this kind could continue long without making an impression on the stronghold; and although the bull did not actually cave in,” it began to show symptoms of weakness. Encouraged bj this, the dog made one more attack, and succeeded in dragging his antagonist itlto' a deep pool, where he soon breathed his last, being partly killed and partly suffocated. To remove the carcase bodily was impossible, so it had to be cut up on the spot, and the parts carried away. Some idea of the value of the prize may he obtained from the: fact that each of the captors carried off three hundred potmds of meat without bpne. —“ Wairarapa News*”
