POET OF PATE A. SAILED. August 10.—Tongariro, p.s., 59 tons, Irvine, for Wanganui. EXPECTED ARRIVALS. Waitara, s.s., from Waitara. Theresa, schooner, from Hokitika, early. TIME OF HIGH WATER. This day—3.34 a.m., 2.00 p.m. Sunday—B.2l a.m., 3.V.* p.m. Monday—4.2l a.m.. 4 54 p.m. Tuesday—s.lo a m., u.2 ( J p.m. It was recently stated in a Wanganui 'contemporary that the ketch Pearl, from Nelson, arrived off this port, and after some delay, finding that she could not enter, ■'nailed back to Nelson. The fact of her showing herself and then bolting back to Nelson is quite concct, but at the same time, without some explanation, the statement might unjustly and unfavorably affect the already by no means too good reputation the port has lately obtained. At the time she came it was some hour or so after high water, too late for her to come in on that tide. The harbormaster, signalled her to that effect, and, as it was blowing strongly, she put to sea. She must then have rim straight back, for she never made her appearance again, the next heard of her being that she had returned to Nelson. Very probably her master acted in accordance with bis ‘instructions, and with flic best .judgment, but no blame is fairly due to fids or any ■other.port Hinder such-circumstances.
