~. [Peii Pkess Agency.] , NEW PLYMOUTH. July 25. A large meeting ‘ was held last night,convened by E. M. Smith, to explain why smelling at Henui was a failure. He had diagrams, and said he defied the whole' colony.to say that ,iron sand could not be smelted with commercial success. • He pointed out that little of, the iron sand had been put into. the furnace, and a man having no confidence in its success to u blow in ” the- furnace. If he (Smith)' had , a trial Tie would prove it could bo run. Mr Yivian, who is not a shareholder, thought that Smith should have a chance.Mr■ Matheson, a shareholder, sai.d he had pointed out-twelve months since, what would happen, and his words had been: verified, lie moved " Ilavirtg’heard Smith, fhisineefing is of opinion that the directors would ,be consulting the interest of the shareholders and the community, in allowing Smith the use of the furnace, and needful materials to smelt the iron* sand.’h The resolution was carried unanimously. .Over, four hundred Were present at meeting. ; : •- ' " .' ■ '*: • AUCKLAND. . Huly 22. At tlio nomination for City West. Messrs Tonks and Parnall were proposed. The meeting was entirely hr favour of Mr •T-ouksyOut-ik-Eacuallls supporters declared their-determination of going to the poll. Captain Uald.y said die considered it an insult to City West for Partial 1 to come forward, while he owed the City £7OO. He moved that the meeting request Mr Tonks to proceed to Wellington as early as possible, pledging itself to secure his return. The motion was agreed to.

It is believed that alluvial gold has been discovered in a ,crock at Waiuuiomata, about 10 miles from Wellington. The New Zealand Steam Shipping Company intend selling their-reniainhig steamers and winding up the company. A large number of shares are taken in the new projected Gas Company, which undertakes to supply gas at ten shillings per thousand feet. A trial of Captain Thomas Thompson’s patent boat lowering and .detaching apparatus was made here to-day. A boat, secured for sea, was put in the water, ten feet clear of the side, by men "who had never .seen it before, in ton seconds, and'with oars out in fifteen seconds. Nautical men of standing who witnessed the feat pronounced, it much superior to anything yot known.
