Since leaving London 60 cases of scarlatina and rheumatic fever broke out. Sixteen'deaths occurred, and there are still two bad cases, one scarlatina and the other rheumatic fever'. The vessel has been placed "in ‘^u^rarifine. The City of Netv York has arrived with the English mails, via San Francisco. ' NEW PLYMOUTH. ~IV v July 15. The Hon. H. Scotland’s letter to the Colonial Secretary appears in this morning’s papers. He does not apologise, but makes an explanation, in which he says ho does not endorse alt J,. G. S. Grant’s statements. Mr Bell, proprietor of the Dunedin Evening Star, has been committed for trial for libel on the Roman Catholic clergy.
