We understand that owing to the unsatisfactory state of the Church’s financial affairs, the committee have resolved to close the Church of England in Reef ton.. Two white men were out shooting pheasants (says the Budget) in the neighborhood of Bell Block on Sunday last, on Maori land. The Maoris watched the shooters, but did not attempt to interfere until the sport was over, when a few of them went up quietly and collared the birds which had been shot. Thames Star says ; —“ It is rumored that both the New Zealand Shipping Company and Shaw, Savill, and Co. intend to have steamers of their oWn on the coast next season, to act as tenders to their ships in collecting wool and grain. Miss Havergal sends to the i Tome Words the following simple contrivance for winter warmth, which deserves to be more fully known. It is a hay quilt. ‘I can toll,’ says the writer, ‘ from experience on cold nights among the Swiss mountains how comfortable is this quilt. It is nothing but a large cotton bag with a few handsful of hay shaken lightly through it; hut it is as warm as two or three blankets. It need cost almost nothing. The breadths of an old cotton dress run together or old curtains or any other used-out or washed-out material will do for the large double squares, which should he quite as wide as the bed the quilt is intended to cover. Most farmers would give a few handsful of hay, and there is a coverlet wliich will keep out any amount of cold. A hay-quilt working party would in one afternoon provide almost as much comfort as a blanket fund. Poor mothers might make their children nice and warm at night if they would only try this simple plan.’ The idea is a good one and -worth a trial now the cold weather appears to have set in.
