The Patea Mail. PUBLISHED WEDNESDAY AND SATURDAYS WEDNESDAY, JUNE 7, 1876.

‘Tiik poll, taken yesterday to fill the Town Board vacancies, resulted in the re-election ’of the three retiring members, Messrs' Sherwood, Rhodes, and Taplin, Messrs Rale amt Aitchson, who were expected by many to occupy a very different position, forming the beaten division. The following are tho correct numbers: Sherwood ... 28 Rhodes ... 26* Taplin ... ... 26 Dale ... ... ... ... 22 Aitchson ... 18 It will be thus seen that though the highest number of votes recorded were hut few, the contest was remarkably dose. Mr Sherwood only secured a majority of two over Mr Rhodes, whilst the latter was only three ahead of Mr Taplin, who scraped in, in turf ver naeular, by a Lead only. Apropos of tho state of the poll, we cannot allow the occasion to goby without expressing regret that the Town Clerk did not know' more about the usual procedure on tho part of Returning’ Officers than to attempt to keep the result locked up till the official declaration this morning. Very frequently in elections, tho official tied a rati on is not made for a week after tho polling day, but Returning Officers of all bodies, whether for the House of Representatives, Rond Boards, Borough Councils, or other, invariably post up a list when the returns are made up. or should there be distant returns to come In, as far as they are made. up. ‘ Verb sap sat.’ Now that the Board is reconstituted, wo trust its mom hers will go into harness forthwith. There are many things needing attention that they can, with advantage, at once take up. Above all things lot us hope that unanimity may prevail, that any potty feeling may be laid aside, and that all'may unite in impartially carrying out anything that may tend to general advantage or. the public good.
