DOG TAXES.
(TO the editor of the patba mail.) Sir, —Having: noticed a letter in your if sue of last Saturday, on the above subject, I would like to ask through your columns whether the Maoris are British subjects or n< t. If not, why are they allowed the privileges of such ? If they are, why have they not to conform to the laws as such ? Now I suppose there is not a single dog out of the hundreds possessed by the Maoris in the Tatea, district that is registered, but a white map, must register or the limbs of the law are down on him in double quick time. Under these I would suggest that the settlers should either combine together and refuse to pay taxes until the Maoris are compelled to do the same, or to carry
on a regular crusade against Maori dog's, destroying them whenever and wherever seen. One thing is certain—something must be done, or serious losses among the settlers’ sheep during the coming winter will be the result. Hoping these few remarks may not be lost on my fellow settlers, . I am, &c., PRO BONO PUBLICO.
