CARLYLE TOWN BOARD.
,4>, ■ ■ (to the editor or the ratka mail.) Sir, —Upon reading the balance-sheet of the above Board, published in your last issue, I noticed that the only amount that appeared amongst the disbursements for law costs incurred by the Board, was an item of £2 to Mr Hammorton, for p oparing a bond. Being under the impression that the Board incurred law costs to the extent of several pounds in a case brought against them by Mr Ivoss, I expected to sec the amount expended by the Board in defending the case mentioned in the balance-sheet. The conclusion I have therefore come to is, that no expenses were incurred in defending the case, or else the same is included in the amount paid Mr Ivoss' for advertising. If the latter, 1 must say that it does not reflect credit upon the Chairman of the Board for signing the balance-sheet in its present form." The ratepayers have a perfect right to know how much of their money is spent in law during the year, and the Chairman of the Board from his boasted knowledge of the way to conduct public husincss shouid have known better than to have signed the balance-sheet, unless it was to his interest to let it appear In its present form. I am, A-c., ARG US. Pa tea, May 20, IS7G.
