CARLYLE TOWN BOARD.
(TO THE EDITOR OF THE PATEA MAIL.] Sir, —While agreeing with the members of the above Board that it is absolutely necessary that steps should be taken to repair the main road through the town, I must say that the last steps taken towards the object in view, viz—requesting that the sum of £2OO voted for the erection of a gaol by the Provincial Council, should be handed over to the Town Board, for the purpose of repairing the main road through Carlyle —was a step that never should have been taken. The Board have no more right to ask that the amount in question should be spent on the road, than they have to ask that the rates collected in, say the Hawera district, should be used for the purpose. The £2OO was voted for the erection of a gaol for the Patea district and is a matter that concerns the district as a whole, and not any one portion of it. No doubt the members of the Beard who voted for the motion have already seen that they have made a mistake in the matter.
The statement made at the meeting that the Superintendent said that the vote had lapsed for the erection of a gaol, because the Town Board did not apply for the money, is simply ridiculous. The Board had no right to interfere in the matter. It was the duty of the Provincial authorities to have expended the vote, in the same way they did the amounts voted for pilot’s house, &c. Trusting that the amount may yet be forthcoming for the purpose intended. I am &c. W. DALE
