CARLYLE TOWN BOARD.

(to the editor oe the pate a mail.) SiR, —As it is advisable tliat the doings <4 public bodies should be made known to those interested, I will ask you to lind space in your next issue for the following remarks. The above Board have nearly completed their term of cilice, ami the ratepayers will shortly be called upon to elect three members in place of Messrs (Sherwood, Tapliu, and Itmules. It would be well for lhe ratepayers Jo bestir themselves, and consider the question of infusing now blood into tbc Board. It seems to me that one or two members of the present Board can do what they like with the rest—partly owing to the fact that most: of the members have no knowledge of the way to conduct public business. I see by the advertisement about leasing town reserves that refreshments will be provided at the sale. I have been making enquiries into this matter to lind mil what member proposed that the rat epayers’ money should be expended m this way, and f lind that the question of refreshments did not come before the Board, ff the auctioneer is iinding the refreshment himself that is another matter, but I am led to believe that the expense is authorised by one or two members of the Board. If this expense is incurred, so sure shall the Provincial Auditor he made aware of the fact, and then the members who are anxious to find refreshment for the public (for what reason 1 know not, unless it is f-»r tin; purpose of exciting persons to bid higher than they olhenvi.se would ; if so, I must say that it is a disgrace to a public body, and will recoil upon those who proposed it) will lind that the law does not permit ratepayers’ money to bo spent in tiiat way ; so the members in question iiad better be prepared with the necessary cost to pay for what they order, because they may rest assured that, although they may get the account passed by the Board, the Provincial Auditor will not do the same for them. Is it not necessary, fellow ratepayers, that you should lake more interest in these matters than you have hitherto done ? The above is only a sample of the way your business is being conducted. Trusting that these remarks will have the desired effect, I am, &c., PATEPAYEP.
