HAWERA TOWN BOARD.
(TO THE EIUTOR OF THE PATEA MAII..)' Sin, —Upon reading your report, of thd last meeting of the above body, I noticed: that it was resolved that Messrs Campbell and Dale should bo asked to reduce their fee for assessing the town lands The 1 amount charged not being mentioned, I naturally concluded that those gentlemen had demanded some unreasonable sum in payment for their labors, but I was’ agreeably surprised to find that the amount asked for the services rendered was only £ls, which, in my opinion, is a very reasonable sum—an amount that will not pay them as well as the £lO received hy them for assessing the Carlyle town lands, considering the, distance they had to come, and the expense they would incur in travelling, &c. If the Board had studied economy in the matter of the Town Clerk's salary, it would have looked better, instead of attempting to reduce the small amount charged by the gentlemen named, who well earned the amount they asked foi'. I am, &c., RATEPAYER'.**' ' Ilawcra, March 27, 187 G.
