Dr Carr will appear to-night, and give one of his amusing lectures, and at the same time illustrate tho wonders of mesmerism. He is so well-known, and his ability is so generally recognised, that it is hardly necessary for us to say anything whatever on his behalf, for he, literally, is a host in himself. He will bo open to lecture on heads presented to him for phrenological examination, and, we hear, a great many 7 are anxious to submit their bumps for his manipulation and judgment. Several have already expressed themselves willing to be made mesmeric subjects, if the doctor be capable of influencing them; those who attend to-night will see how far his {lowers in tin’s direction extend. He will commence at the Albion Hall, at 8 p.m., and may 7 be assured of a full house. To-morrow afternoon, at tho Court House, at three o’clock, he will deliver his thrilling discourse, “ Tho Soul after the Grave, ”to which admission will be free. The return match between the Hawera | and Carlyle Cricket Clubs, will be played to-day here. Tlie Hawera club obtained a signal victory on their own ground at Waibi on tho first occasion, and there is every probability of. their repeating their performance to day 7 . The following are the names of the Carlyle team : —Messrs Fraser (captain), Mae Kay, Tennenf. Inman, Jacomß, Anilide]!. Tap;in, -Meredith, Baggett, Dasenr, and Nicholson. As the ease is mb jiia’ic we cannot express an opinion on iI, hut are at liberty to slate the bare facts, fur readers, commercial readers especially, to form their own opinions on. Mr Tapiin, the well-known storekeeper of (Ins (own. had, in reply to an order, some hisenils sent him from Wanganui, for the use of tlie survey party now engaged on the Wliennaknra block. He sent down for them in the usual course, hut they were not landed, and thoiiyh lie had sent ayain for them on the.same day, the ayvnt could not find if convenient to deliver them to Mr Taplin's drayman, and at four o'clock they were snapped np and hurried into the store adjoining the wharf, presumedly leased hv Mr Hibson, althmiyh tin; freight on same had been prepaid at Wanganui. The I at ter yentleinan subsequently charyed •Is fid storaye, &e., for the biscuits, which Mr Tapliu paid under protest, ami has since issued a summons against Mr Gibson to recover. A round robin, we are told, is being prepared by the business men of the district for presentation to the owners of the Tongariro, protesting against the manner in wi ich the local agency of the boat is conducted, and praying for some relief from the present system. It is high time some such step should be taken, and the owners, if they are wise, will attend to the complaint. Though we have not had an opportunity tills year, of chronicling the production of huge gooseberries, or any other vegetable monsters, we have to acknowledge the receipt of some giant stalks of rhubarb, grown at Wairoa by Mr James Dickie, which do Ids horticultural abilities credit. They are nearly three feet in length, with a circumference of some eight incites and it may bo easily imagined that very few of them make a goodly pie. We hope that other gardeners may bo equally successful in their elforst.
Dr Carr will deliver a lecture at Wairoa, on Tuesday evening next, and will certainly draw a large attendance. The good people of Wairoa are debarred from such amusement, as a rule, and the visit of the talented doctor will be a ray of light, to dispel their usual darkness for an evening at least. The question of a Harbor Board for Patea will have to stand over for a lime, until a bill is passed through the House of Representatives next session, which bill will be prepared by the Provincial Executive. Such is the reply to the petition sent to the Superintendent. A somewhat similar reply has boon sent by the Superintendont of Wellington to the petition from Wanganui asking for a Harbor Board for that place.
A well attended committee meeting of the Patea District Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held in Carlyle last Saturday. A number of matters connected with the forthcoming show wore arranged including the question of judges. The following gentlemen are to he asked to accept the position ; —For horses—Mcss; a (It rsc, Hately, and Crcig. For cattle—.Messrs Davidson, W. .1. Owen, and J.W. Gower. For sheep—Messrs .Matheson, .1. W. li.-ikvr, find Piddle. An additif mill sum of Alb was voted for yards on show ground, and it was decided to lca«e the association ground at Kakaramea for a term of years.
