HAWERA.
orii OWN OORKESPONDEST.) .Mr Chamberlain is about to re-open Ids school, and parents' will, I am sure, hi; heartily glad to have their children placed once more under restraint. The election is over, and our little community is again at peace. It is understood that Mr Thomas Middleman will shortly he enrolled as a Justice of the Peace, hut I can scarcely credit the truth of the rumour, for I believe Major Atkinson to be more leary than to make such a recommendation m favour of so obedient a supporter. However time will tell. The great Normanby Hotel still hangs fire, and it is now beginning to be questioned whether the gentleman whose name was mentioned as likely to be elevated to the high position of barman w r as justified in putting tradesmen and others to the trouble of furnishing estimates for tho supply of beer, building material, paperhangings, painting, &c., for the Leviathan Chimera or not, hut one thing is certain that, the whole affair is likely to end in a bottle of smoke, and the “political barman" will have to seek fresh fields and pastures new-, for his occupation is gone, as tho Abolition Bill is destined to annihilate whatever is left of him. However he has an alternative course left, and that is, scandal mongering for an occupation. Major Atkinson promised a few weeks ago that a tri-weekly mail service should be, established between Hawera and Ketemarae, at the beginning of the present year, but, like all past promises, it yet remains unfulfilled, and the settlers of both places are submitted to serious postal inconvenience, but I have no doubt on tho eve of the next general election he will have occasion to remember his promise. The residents of Hawera are thinking of inaugurating a spelling bee, and inviting the members of the Patea Education Board to contest for prizes, but it is feared that at least one of its members will not occupy the stage For long , as the word Albion lias been selected by one of the examiners to be put to the enlightened member of the Education Board as a test word, but I and others are of opinion that the worthy member lias mastered the orthography of tho word since exhibiting it in his window to the vulgar gaze of passers by, as it is stated that one of the Patea school boys espied the error, and the placard has since disappeared. The crops are looking excellent in this district, and settlers are all busy haymaking. The bazaar held here on New Year’s Day was fairly attended, notwithstanding the counter attraction of the sports, and I understand some £2O lias been added to the funds. It is intended to invite tenders for. the erection of a Wesleyan Church at an early date, and this energetic body deserve credit for the manner in which tlmy are pushing forward church matters i;; ibis dis'rict.
