TO THE ELECTORS OF THE EG MOST DISTRICT. G K XTLEMEN, — rpHOIJGH unable to att end at the da.JL claration of the poll at Taranaki, where I could have explained myself at greater length, I trust the distaivoe will excuse my absence, but not withstanding, I wish most sincerely to thank those gentlemen, who so gallantly, and in the face of such overpowering odds, supported mo in (he late struggle. I cannot he So invidious as to mention names, hut there are a few to whom 1 am under special obligation for their disinterested aid, and to them I beg to tender my special acknowledgment and boart-fclt thanks. Though having failed to secure election, I hope and believe that my candidature has not been without fruit, and that it will do much that will be of service to yon in time to come. I have at least shown the Colonial Treasurer that to nit for a district is not to re/>resenl it, that, no matter bow high his position maybe, constituencies require leal service at thp hands of th-ir representatives, despite Ministerial disqualifications, and that if Major Atkinson expects any future renewal of confidence, Minister or no Minister, he must stir himself more than he has so far done for Egmont. My candidature was a pro test on the part of Patea against his donothing policy, against the way he has hitherto neglected its best interests, and the indifference lie Ims shown to it. If I have succeeded in creating the slightest spark of political remorse in him, on account of the past, or in awakening reformation in future, I shall have accomplished much on your behalf. In conclusion I may trust that the acquaintanceships formed during my canvass, may' lead to a different result, should I ever again have the honour of soliciting your suffrages Once more I beg most heartily to thank those who voted for me, and hope that those who supported my opponent, may never ha\ e occasion to regret their choice.
