BRASS BAND V. JAMES SOUTHBY.

(to the kditou of the pate.a mail.)

Sir, —In your issue of tho 6th inst, I was sorry to see your very valuable columns taken up with such trash as that of “jßig Drum.” If he is one of us, ho should keep dark, and not stir up the subject any more, as I am strongly of opinion that we (the members) have been sold by Mr James Southby, for I believe that his promises are like piecrust, made to be broken. As regards the necessary information required by “Big Drum” in refererence to the deputation that was appointed to wait on him, I might explain that he 'was not in town at the time, .and after his return I took tho earliest opportunity of communicating to him tho result of the public meeting-, at the same time enclosing a copy of the resolution and the names of the gentlemen willing to take part in the proposed hand. Some considerable time after, I had the pleasure of meeting him, and inquired for a reply to my letter. He informed me that he had sent away to Auckland to ascertain the price of the instruments required, and found that the sum was more than he expected ; in fact, he had been very unfortunate lately, and had experienced some heavy losses. M hat with a calf that had died, worth; 30s, and then, again, one of his pigs had a litter of young ones, and six of them fell into a water hole and were drowned. So that with one thing and another, I think, Mr “Big Drum” you ought to make some allowance for time, for lam of opinion that we shall obtain the said instruments —some day. Trusting that I have not intruded on your valuable space. I am, &c., JAMES LETT. G.P. & Sec. P. 8.8.
