JOCKEY CLUB HANDICAP.

The acceptances for the Jockey Club Handicap, received on Thursday evening, last, showed that ton out of fourteen entries were contents, and a more complete answer to the Wanganui complaints could not possibly have been given. It i.sjmt possible that even this very good proportion of acceptors may be swelled, inasmuch as, wc presume, the same rule holds good with the Patca Jockey Club, uni versa! with the first clubs in the world, viz., that any entry or acceptance ]>ostcd on the day of their closing, and bearing the post-mark of that date, is received. An accident may have delayed some distant letter, through no fault of the owner, and it would bo manifestly unfair to bar any horse under those circumstances. But, allowing that no more come in, the acceptances tot up five-sevenths of the whole—a result very seldom achieved, anc! one that reflects credit on the handicappers. Out of these . certainyeTgrit, and very likely the whole, will start, and a splendid race may be confidently looked for. Wo understand that the other races are also likely to be well filled, and first clads sport may therefore be expected. the above was in type, we have that Mr Donald Fraser wrote to accept with “New Chum,” and forwarded a cheque for the money to pay np. Unfortunately, however, his hor.-e v. as seriously injured a few days age, and he telegraphed before the acceptances'dosed withdrawing for that reason. Under the circumstances the Stewards very properly returned the money, but the fact goes further to prove the excellence of the handicap, eleven out of fourteen accepting.
