PATEA WEST ROAD BOARD WORKS

TO THE EDITOR OF THU HATHA. MAI 1,. Sir, —On looking over the proceedings, of the Batea West Road Board in your issue of the 12th inst., I was surprised to find that one tender only had been sent in for works on Ganu Road, as 1 had been informed by several persons that they intended to tender for the woik ; yet in your loading article of the same date, 1 hear that astonishment has been expressed at the slow engagement of the late immigrants, so I should imagine that Jack of labour was not the cause of more competition. Secondly, 1 saw it was resolved that objections to the rate roll would he heard on Monday, loth November, hut on looking over the advertising columns I tailed to see a notification to that effect. Thirdly, a statement was prepared and adopted showing the proposed expenditure of ihe rates for Ihe current year, for the approval of the Superintendent at New Plymouth. It is quite probable the Superintendent (who just now is in the Empire city) has*,never seen the proposed works, and, such being the case, by what right has the Superintendent to nullify the works proposed by the Board ot Commissioners, the said Commissioners (seven), being rate payers, and elected by the rate payers residing in the district. Talk about red tape, this is a red tape with a vengeance, I am, Ac., A RATEPAYER WHO VOTED AT THE LAST ELECTION.
