WAIROA HIGHWAY BOARD.
The usual monthly meeting of the above board was held on October 2nd, all the wardens being present. Mr Riches objected to being rated for sections 43, 61, 63, 64, Wairoa. Appeal not allowed. Mr Kenah presented a memorial from T. Harris and other settlers, asking for certain works on the road across the Kohi, and repuesting the Board to apply to the General Government for a grant, out of proceeds ef confiscated land sale. Estimates and specifications to be prepared. Messrs Durie and Wilkie applied to have the Waitotara river road made passable. Specifications to be prepared if a road is laid ofi! there.
Mr Jas. Durie applied for permission to erect three gates on road through his land. Granted for 12 months.
Mr Wilkie applied for leave to erect a gate on the road running beside his land. Granted for 12 months.
Mr Hlston applied for leave to erect a fence across the road between sections 190 and 185: also a gate on road between sections 190 and 138, Permission granted for gate for 12 months. Applications received from Jas. Nicholson, to make some of the roads from the Whenuakura bridge to his property passable. Mr lon to report to next meeting. Tenders received for road at Whenuakura to Mr Wilson’s. J. Bourio, £39 11s ; declined; D. Johnstone, £39 10s, accepted. Tenders for road near W. McDonnell’s.
J. Bourie, £7B 15s ; J. Old, £34 10s ; D. Johnstone, £3B 10s ; Summers, £37. AI | declined, the Board not feeling justified in expending so much money upon the contract.
Mr Fookes requested the Board to apply to the General Government through Captain Wray, for a portion of proceeds of the sale of confiscated lands to be expended upon the Okotuku road through the bush.
The Board decided to apply for the whole proceeds of sale of lands in Okotuku district, for the purpose of opening up roads to the land sold. A memorial from Mr Winchcombe and of settlers, asking for the road to be made to Mr G. Johnston’e land. The wardens of Nos 1 and 2 wards to examine and report at the next meeting. Permission granted to Mr Mitchell to erect a gate across the road for 12 months.G. Millman objected to being rated for section. The Board refused to entertain any objection, as Millman was an annual tennant.
Memorial from W. Dickie and eight others, requesting the Board to open up the Upper Mangatangi road. Tenders to be called for.
Surveyor to be engaged to report upon road between Elmslie’s and Collins. Estimates to be prepared for Dyke’s road.
The Chairman authorised to have the Middle Mangatangi road repaired. Mr lon was empowered to employ labour to keep the Kohi road in repair, expenditure not to exceed £5 without the special authority of the Board. Tenders to be called for keeping the lower Mangalangi road in repair. Accounts passed—J. Sinclair, £3O 10s,
