In the Legislative Council this day, on the motion of Ngatata, the speeches of the native members were ordered to be printed in the ‘ Waka Maori,’ Wellington. The Harbour Bcserves Bill was thrown out on the motion of Pharazyn. The Highway Boards Empowering Bill was further considered and amended in Committee, hut has not yet passed the third reading. - HOUSE OF REPIIKSENTATLVES. September 15.
A motion by Mr Stout, to the effect that the most prolitable and desirable way of disposing of the waste lands of the Crown was by a leasing system, end asking the House to allinn the prineiple. Last evening’s sitting was entirely occupied with ]>fivate business. The* Bankrupt (,*y Act Amendment Bill was read a second time.
Tairoa presented a petition to amend flic Maori Bepreseiitatioii Act by giving three more members to Maoris. The lions.' went into committee upon the Abolition Bill. Stout moved that tins title he altered to “The Two Provinces Act, 1875.” —Wood strongly supported the motion, as he considered the real tendency of the Bill was separation, and it Ought to show that on the face of it. The motion was negatived on the voices. Clause two was struck <ut, and slight amendments'were made in the interpretation clause. The fourth, or abolishing clause, was amended so as to repeal the second section of the Constitutional Act, and the abolishing of the different provinces of the Colony. Grey moved that the word “Auckland ” he struck out, and announced that he reserved Ids right as Superintendent to test at the proper time the legality of the present proceedings. The motion was negatived on the voices. Stout then moved that Otago he lei t out, and demanded a division. The result was 53 to 11.—O’Connor moved a long amendment, providing for creation of provincial districts on application of a certain number of electors, but it was withdruvn at the request of several members.—Wood moved that the clause be expunged, and was strongly supported by Grey. The remainder of' the afternoon was taken up with discussing an amendment hy Cuthbortson, that Southland and the municipality of Queenstown bo created a provincial district. It was chiefly Otago members who spoke, and the discussion was cut short by 5.30, the time for adjourning for dinner. September 17. House met at 2.30. Not the slightest progress made with Abolition Bill this afternoon; Still on 12th clause. Murray and Stout taking great many objections. Large part of sitting occupied on question of privilege raised by Titzherbert, who said that a press agency telegram about Grey had been tampered with in the Crons office. The hon. gentleman referred in very severe terms to the matter. Luckic made a spirited reply, and read a telegram from the manager of the Crofts, stating that the alteration was made in the Echo office. In any case ht maintained that all the telegrams about the same matter were substantially the same in meaning. The matter was allowed to drop without any motion being made,Ilonse rose at 6.30. The designs for the new Club House, next the Town Hall, Collins Street, have been submitted to the Ih il ling Committee. The cost is £12,000. During a thunderstorm yesterday, a young woman in Stephen’s Street had a narrow escape from death. She was struck by a blinding Hash, which rendered her insensible for half-an-hour.
A reef was struck in flic Magda!a mine, Stawell, at a depth of 1081 feet, and penetrated three feet without being through. The Cable is expected to be repaired to-morrow. Madam Kistori gave a grand performance of Judith last night.
