At the R.AI. Court, on Thursday last, the magistrate displayed a little inconsistency in two verdicts—one in the ease of Gth-.on v. Corrigan and the other in the case of ll'tjinu v. Corrigan. The defendant in the Host case was sued for 18s, being amount of change alleged to have been picked up I>y defendant off plaintiff's counter. The Bench gave a verdict for the amount with .25 IDs costs, the verdict going in the direction of establishing prisoner's guilt of feloniously removing the money. In the larceny csso against the same defendant, the Bench viewed the case through a new pair of spectacles, and acquitted prisoner. If Innocent of the more serious charge, it was hard to order him to restore ISs with heavy costs, but we are of opinion that this young gentleman has had a very narrow escape of securing lodgings in an establishment where lie would have had no occasion to test the hospitality of the landlord. .Members of the Wairoa Light Horse who intend competing at the Cavalry prize competition, to bo held at Wanganui on the 27th September, are requested to forward, their names to the Captain as soon as possible. Practice will bo held at the racecourse at 2 p.m on Saturday.
Alr James AleGregor, who has so successfully conducted the Kotcniarac branch of Air John Gibson’s business, for the huq 12 mouths, completed its purchase this week. The total amount of purchase money reported to bo paid for land, building, stock, and a large quantity of sawn timber, is £2,000. 'We heartily wish Mr AleGregor every success in his spirited venture, which few young men of his age would have had the pluck to have attempted. The building is undergoing extensive alterations, and when completed will measure 3Gft x 24ft. The work is being pushed forward with despatch, and is expected to be completed in a fortnight’ Air AleGregor proceeds South next week in order to make purchases for his new premises.
Owing to some misprint in the Ordinance passed at the last session of the Taranaki Provincial Council, vesting certain reserves in the Patea Education Board, the measure lias been scut back from Wellington for amendment, and immediately on its return will bo presented to the Governor for assent.
