CHAIRMAN CARLYLE TOWN BOARD.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE PATEA MAIL. Sin, —It has been industriously circulated this afternoon that George Francis Sherwood, Esq., M.P.C., will be the forthcoming chairman for the Town Board of Carlyle, and I trust for the credit of the Board and the credit of the town, that the rumour is but a “canard,” for I can hardly believe that a majority of the gentlemen elected to-day would allow the office to be filled by the gentleman to which rumour points. Mr W. Williams or Mr Milroy I trust to sec in the field, as both gentlemen arc fitted for the position. Many are of the opinion that it requ'ros special training to qualify a man to preside over a coporatc body, but a dispassionate mind and impartial rulings are the essential qualifications which a chairman should possess. I was rather amused at the nomination yesterday, when I heard such balderdash uttered by Mr Sherwood—that he was induced to stand by the retirement of Mr McGuire, as he believed the Board required the assistance of some gentleman possessing experience in legislative matters, but I can hardly regard Mr Sherwood in the light of the Board’s saviour, as I am of opinion this chance member’s services could be judiciously dispensed with in all public matters, I am, &c., ANTI-HUMBUG, Carlyle, August 24,1875.
