HAWE RA.
(from our own CORRKSI'OXDKXT.) Our little township at present wears anything but a pleasing appearance to the eye of a visitor, as its streets are complete millponds. It is next to impossible for Eve’s representatives to present themselves to the vulgar gaze of Mr Middlemas’s “ Hum Tunis.” The poor creatures are like the bees at the present season of the year, and I think Government are in a large measure responsible for these fair charmer’s seclusion. I noticed Mr Espange’s fascinating b. r.uan elevated the other day on a set of s.ilts, and he carried a most gentlemanly gait. This appears to be a favourite style of locomotion with this young gentleman in order to protect Ins boots from the mud. However, I am glad to inform you that the contract for the formation of our street is let, and as soon as the spring of the year sets in will be taken in hand. Hitherto wo have been a law-loving and peaceful community, but we are gradually drifting in the opposite direction, and the absence of a lock-up is beginning to be severely felt. The other evening, after the Wanganui coach drew up at Quinlivau’s Hotel, a woman descended, and her gait was a close approach to a certain gentleman when mounted on stilts. (Shortly after her arrival she was observed “ dreaming the happy hours away ” under the verandah of the Egmont Hotel, and her little child, cold and hungry, standing by his unhappy and senseless parent. The attention of the police was immediately directed to this heartrending scene, but instead of at once removing this unfortunate creature from her unpleasant situation, one of the constabulary commenced to abuse the landlord for not taking her under his roof, and went so far as to accuse the proprietor of the hotel, under whose verandah the unconscious woman sought protection from the bitter cold, of supplying her with the alcohol which reduced her to the degrading position in which she lay. For upwards of two hours our inhuman police allowed this scene to present itself to the cruel gaze of an unsympathising public, and when at last, moved by the repeated appeals of the proprietor, the unfortunate specimen of a woman was conveyed to the Blockhouse, and after indulging for a few hours in nature’s sweet restorer, she was released from her inhospitable quarters. Mrs Quinlivan, with her usual hospitality, attended to the wants ot the child, by supplying it with tea. The unhappy
mother had procured a most undesirable com panion during her trip up in tin? coach in the shape of a bottle of alcohol, which she drained to the dregs, producing the scene above described. 1 trust that Major Turner will administer a whoelsome lesson to the officer in charge fur allowing the holder of a license and a respec-df table hotelkeeper to lie insultoi 1 by 4* person whose duty it was to protect him from the enactment of such scenes. This woman in question obtained no liquor within the bar of the house, and if any drink bad been carried outside, it was without the knowledge of the landlord. 1 trust that speedy steps will be taken for the erection of a Jock-up in this quarter, and that our representatives will bring the matter under the the notice of the Government. Mr James Livingston, who has recently been appointed a J.P., took Lis seat on the Bench for the first time on (Saturday last. His fofiy form is certain to add weight to the' Bench, and I feel confident that his appointment will prove a great assistance to the H.M. The Duvalii .Sisters arc announced to appear on Finlay evening, and the morbid curiosity of the linm Turns is being awakened to witness the renowned Can Can dance, but I very much question if their appetite will be satisfied, as the limited stage accommodation in the Block House will hardly permit for the usual flourish in sneh an undignified exhibition. The contractors for the Bank of New South Wales are making good headway with their contract. The building is expected to be completed within a fortnight. It will prove a great ornament to our town. Mr _ Winks is fencing in one of the educational reserves in this district, but 1 trust he will not discover to his cost that he is doing the work for the benefit of some competitor when the reserve is let by public auction. It is to be hoped that our active member (Mr Middlemas) will cause the Board to place these reserves in the market without delay, Ketemarae is earning a well-deserved reputation for dissipation, as our last monthly court was chiefly occupied in hearing and deciding cases of drunkenness, assaults, &c. It is a pity the police are not more successful in earning out their duties in that quarter. Mr Quinlivan, of the Egmont Hotel, has nearly completed the addition of a new wing to his hotel, and when finished will provide Hawera with superior hotel accommodation, the want of which has so long been felt by the travelling public, and will make this hotel the most commodious between New Plymouth and Wanganui. -Ihere was a large native meeting held at Pepe s, Ketemarae, on Tuesday last, and I learn that the race have resolved to submit all their greivanoes in future to a legal British tribunal for redress instead ol adjudicating upon their differences themselves. A meeting is to held at Tito Kowara’s this week. Business of a similar nature. The 11. v. Father Pertuis is about taking up his permanent residence in Hawera. A parochial residence will shortly be erected for him. There is great inconvenience experienced owing to the absence of postal communication between Hawera and Ketemarae, and I understand a petition is about being sat on foot to be presented to the Postmaster-General, praying for the establishment of a service.
