Mr Kelly, the Provincial Secretary, baa not been slow in giving effect to the resolution passed at the last session of the Provincial Council, as we learn that the boundaries of the town of Carlyle have been extended by proclamation in the Government Our.cAU’, of Thursday last to .vL,uniiiieiiae(l 1:0 tiie Provmeinl Government. We trust shortly to bear of the meeting being lived for the election of members to serve on the Carlyle Town Board. The animal meeting of members of the Patea, Wairoa, and Hawera Agricultural and Pastoral Association, will be held at, the Kakaramea Hotel, on Wednesday next, at 1 p.m. Tlie chief business to bo transacted will be the election of officers for the ensuing twelve months. As there are a large number of settlers likely to be present, we are of opinion a more favourable opportunity for the consideration of the formation of a local shipping company could uot present itself, and wo trust to hoar of the matter being set on foot. As to its necessity in the interests of the settlors there can bo no two opinions. Wo learn that Mr Adams, banister and solicitor, of Nelson, and son of Mr H. Adams, late Provincial Solicitor of that city, is about establishing himself in his profession in this district. He has an extensive and profitable field before him. We have often wondered why a gentleman of the long robe had not been induced to take up his residence in Patea.

Tlie forthcoming sale of Confiscated Lands in the Pa tea district is fixed for Thursday, the IGth September. The notice was published in the Government Gazette of Thursday last, and full particulars will appear in our advertising columns of next issue. A general meeting of members of the newly-formed Patca District Jockey Club is convened for Wednesday afternoon next, the 4th August, at the Albion Hotel. The programme for the forthcoming races will be submitted for adoption, and we trust that it will ho of such a character as to induce good horses to enter, and an index of the success which is generally accorded to tha approaching meeting. The rules for the guidance of the club will also he adopted. We hope to see a good attendance of members. We have made an application to His Honor Judge Kenny to have the Patea Mail declared a Gazette in Bankruptcy, and have received a reply to the effect that His Honor has favourably recommended the application to Judge Gillies’ and should any insolvency or bankruptcy notices raise previous to this journal being declared a Gazette , the usual notices will he ordered to ho inserted in the Mail as well as in the papers at the New Plymouth I end.-

A match for £2 aside between two horses well-known in the district, and owned respectively by Mr McLean and Mr J. Bulger, came oil: on the Wairoa course, on Tuesday last. The distance was once round the course ; catch weights. The running - was made by Mr McLean’s representative, who had the race in hand the whole of t tie way, and won easily. A second match was then made between Mr Wilkie’s grey pony and Kercopa’s black irony. Three to one was freely laid on the patter, who caused his hackers no uneasiness, winning - as lie liked by 20 lengths. At a meeting of the Manntahi Blockhouse Committee, held on Wednesday evening- last, Mr Ginger in the chair, it was resolved to place the building at the disposal of the education Board for the period of one year for the sum of ;£l, providing that the Board held itself responsible for the safety of the furniture, and the room to lie left in a clean state at the. end of each week, lit for Sabbath services. The Whenuakura native meeting, which was Jixed to Ire held yestordiy, was postponed till this morning- for some unexplained reason. We paid a visit yesterday to the native village, and the field was literally strewn with inanimate porkers, Hour, potatoes, lampreys, and liquors not of the choicest brands. As evening approached the contents of the bottles began to disturb the equilibrium of the native orators. We beg to draw attention to Mr W. J. Furlong’s closing auction sale, to be held at his store, Carlyle, at 1 p.ra. to-day, and as the residue of his stock will lie submitted to public competition without reserve, bargains are certain to fall under his hammer. Major Turner left Carlyle on WednesUdy "ftonu.mi lost, for the purpose of making his usual inspection of the Armed Constabulary stationed along the coast, and returned again on Thursday.
