His Honor Judge Kenny delivered a highly interesting lecture on Wednesday evening last in the large room of the Immigration Barracks, in aid of the funds of the Patea Literary Institute. The subject chosen was a “ Century of Progress, from 1775 to 1875.” The attendance owing to the inclemency of the weather, was not as numerous as the merits of the lecture deserved. We regret that the limited space at our disposal preclude us from even giving a summary of the lecture. The learned lecturer gave a remarkably clear and lucid idea of the discovery and improvements effected in navigation, printing, steam, electricity, jurisprudence, and chemistry during the period of the last 100 years. He also touched upon political economy, democracy, and other interesting subjects. The learned lecturer possesses a fine clear voice and fluent delivery, and never lost the ear of his audience throughout the delivery of his lecture. Mr Hirst moved a cordial vote of thanks to His Honour, which was seconded by Mr W. Williams. Mr Hutton thanked the audience for their attendance on behalf of the Literary Society. He was glad to say through the efforts of Mr McGuire the Council had voted the handsome grant of £SO to the Institute, and, with the kind help of the'public, the Society would shortly be in a position to erect a suitable building. Major Turner occupied the chair. The Blackwall discharged the last package of her cargo yesterday, and is now ready for sea. The Tongariro is bar bound at Wanganui, laden with a full cargo for this port.

A meeting of the Homan Catholics will be held in the Church building- this even ing at 7 o’clock, to take steps to petition the Bishop to station a Priest in tile Patea district. We bog again to remind our readers that the St, Vincent Troupe will appear at the Albion Hall on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. The excellence of the entertainment demands good houses. The timber for the new Wesleyan Chapel arrived per Black wall, and, as will be seen from our advertising columns, tenders are invited for its erection. A meeting of gentlemen interested in the formation of a Jockey Club for the Patea district will be held this afternoon at the Albion Hotel, at 2 p.m. The contractors have completed the New South Wales Bank. Possession will be taken to-day. We have inspected the building, and purpose giving a full description of it in our next issue.
