SPECIAL TELEGRAMS.
THE POLITICAL CRISIS. THE OPPOSITION DEFEATED. (from our own correspondent.) NEW PLYMOUTH. Juno 22. The Council were engaged the whole of yesterday (Monday) on the vote of want of confidence motion. Major Brown moved it, with charges of a personal nature against Mr Kelly. Mr Syme rc-echoed Major Brown’s sentiments. Mr Upjohn followed, and supported the policy of the Government, but objected to Mr Kelly. Mr Kelly replied in a very able speech, defending the Government, and showing that Major Brown, as a poor Superintendent, had squandered away public money, and Ills administration bad been a muddle. Two independent members followed, defending Ihe Government. Mr Sherwood spoke in opposition to the Government, making charges “inferentinlly” against All' Kelly. Mr Stnndish made an excellent speech in favour of the Government.
Major Brown replied in a very poor speech. A division was called for. Ayes, i : nor-., 10. Sherwood voted with Brown ; McGuire and Peacock for Government. Mr M‘ Gnire made a speech in favour of the Goctrrauom, Mr Callaghan, a member of the town, was absent.
