THE SAND HILLS ROAD.

We have been favoured with the following communication, in re]dy to the petition forwarded to the Hon Major Atkinson from residents in the Patea District, anent the Sand Hills Road : Wellington, Miy 28, 1875. Silt, — I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 17th instant, transmitting a petition signed by a number of the settlers of Patea, upon the subject of gravelling certain sections of road between Carlyle and Hawera; and also having reference to the past action of Mr O. Carrington with respect to this work. Having referred your letter and the petition to the Hon the Minister for Public Works, to whose department the matter particularly relates, I am glad to be able to inform you that tenders have been called for the works alluded to in the petition, and I trust these will speedily be carried out. And with respect to the implied charges against Mr Carrington, Mr Richardson thinks it desirable that in justice both to that officer and to the public, Mr Gibson should be requested to make a definite charge, iu order that an inquiry may bo forthwith instituted. I have the honor to be, &c., H. A. ATKINSON. G. Sherwood, Esq,, Chairman Petition Committee, Patea.
