PATEA EDUCATION BOARD.
A meeting of the Board was held at the Court-house, Carlyle, on Monday, 7th June, at 10 a.m. Present—Captain Wray (chairman), Messrs Christie, Furlong, and Milroy. The minutes of previous meeting were read and confirmed. Proposed by Mr Christie, seconded by Mr Milroy, and carried—That the midwinter holidays, consisting of one week, commence on the first Saturday in duly, and that the committees receive notice to that effect.
Two applications for assistant teachers were made to the Board. Proposed by Mr Christie, seconded by Mr Milroy, and carried—That owing to the amount of salary expected by the two applicants, neither be accepted. Tenders for fencing the Educational Reserve at Carlyle were laid before the Board. .Jk Proposed by Mr Milroy, sccondoirby Mr Furlong, and carried—That Messrs ; Uavis and Guyatt’s tender for erecting fence at 138s per chain, supplying gate at 70s, cleaning and planting Gibson’s fence at 2s Gd per chain, be accepted. Proposed by Mr Furlong, seconded by Mr Christie, and carried —That tenders be called for erecting a fence round the Hawera school, about three acres. Proposed by Mr Milroy, seconded by Mr Christie, and carried—That the secretary write to Mr H. Williamson, Kakaramea, informing him that the Board are prepared to carry out their former proposition, and that the rent of Hall will be paid in the usual manner, viz., quarterly. An account was placed on tire table from Mr W. Williams, Chairman Patea (School Committee, for 18s Gd. Proposed by Mr Milroy, seconded by Mr christie, and carried—That the account be paid, and that he be informed that in future, all school requisites must be authorized by the Board before pmxhases.
An account from Mr G. D. Ilammcrton was also pascd for payment. Proposed by Mr Furlong, seconded by Mr Milroy, and carried—That Mr Waller’s oiler bo accepted, of one acre of land on the western side of Mr Gilson’s section and that the secretary hi; instructed to have the land properly conveyed to the Board. Proposed by. Mr Milroy, seconded by Mr Christie, and carried—That for the more simple and efficient working of the Educational Ordinance in the Patea District, the Board is of opinion that the local committees should be abolished, and the members of the Patea Education Board be increased to at least seven in uumuer ■, and that a copy of this resolution be delivered to each of the Patea members of the Provincial Council, with a view to obtain their united support.
Proposing by Mr Christie, seconded by Mr Milrov, and carried Thai lire secretary write to the members of the Provincial Council, asking them to use their best endeavours to obtain a further grant for educational purposes ; and also to get reserves handed over to the Board. Proposed by Mr Milroy, seconded by Mr Christie, and carried—That the present deposit in the Bank of New Zealand bo renewed for three months. The Board .then adjourned until Monday, sth July, at 10 a.m.
