WAIROA.
(from our own CORRESPONDENT.) June 8. A meeting was held to-day for the purpose of nominaling the wardens for the new Wairoa Highway District, Mr A. 0. Foukes acting as presiding officer. The district is divided into five wards. For No. 1 Ward, Air I. Lupton was elected, but subject to a protest. Mr D. Flemming was elected for No. 2 Ward. For No. 3 Ward, Messrs J. I.m and W. llowo were proposed. For No. 4 Ward, Messrs J. W. Kcnali and J. McLean were proposed. For No. 5 Ward, Messrs Of. S. Bridge and F. Williamson were proposed. A [toll will be taken on the (Ith July for tiro three last named Wards. A good deal of difficulty lias been placed in the way of this election by the obstrnctiveness of the old Board, of which Mr Russell of Wanganui is chairman, the present valuation having been taken as if r the Wards of the new district had not been defined, although it has been gazetted, and the old Board merely act until the new one should bo appointed. It is a great pity to see such little meannesses cropping up at such times, to the hindrance of public business ; and it is to be hoped the present AVanganui-Waitotara District will seek the services of a chairman fur the ensuing year with a mind above such petty spite. At the close of the election of Highway Wardens, a meeting was held to choose persons for recommendation to the Government for appointment as Justices of the Peace, to supply a much felt want at Wairoa and AVaitotara. Mr F. AVilliamson was voted to the chair. Several gentlemen were proposed, and eventually, after a somewhat unruly and irregular discussion, the meeting, or rather what remained of it, selected Messrs F. Williamson, James Nicholson, and J. W. Kenah ; and Messrs AVineheombe, C. Syme, J. McLem, J. Durie, and A. C. Foolms were appointed as a committee to forward their recommendation to the Government. Subsequently the committee met, and decided that they would not bo justified in complying with the request of the meeting until it had been submitted for approval or rejection to a public meeting, to be duly advertised, and which was to be held on the 19th Juno, at? p.m. The reason for this was that no previous notice had been given of the meeting above alluded to, so that many interested persons had no opportunity of attending. I think AVairoa is the only place in New Zealand of the same population without a J.P., and as all documents under the Land Transfer Act require the ’ attestation of a J.P., it is to he hoped at least one will be appointed. Our telegraph station is now complete, and only awaits the arrival of a telegraphist to enable us to “ wire in.” Please let him know if you see him that we arc anxiously expecting him, and that unless he soon arrives, ho may find the nice new letter box full of letters, as passers by are not supposed to know the office is unoccupied.
