AVc are surr} 7 in iiave to announce the deatli of Mr P. J. AAVmI, one of the oldest inhabitants in the district, who died suddenly on Sunday morning last. Though hj • liad nof been well during the week, Air Ward was walking about the town the evening before his death, which is ascribed to a general breaking nj) of the constitution. The funeral took place on Aloud,ay, and was attended by most of the male inhabitants of Carlyle. AVc beg to draw the attention of the pnb’ie to a sale of stock and merchandise, to be held by Air AViiiiam Dade, at Ilawera, his day at 1 o’clock ; and to a sale of stock at ALumtaiii to-morrow at the same- hour. The steamer Tongariro has Just made a quick trip from this port to AVaiigamn and back. She loft here on Saturday last about eleven o’clock, arrived in Wanganui about eight o’clock in the evening, loaded up with cargo, loft Wanganui about midnight, and came up to the Patea wharf about eleven a.in. cm Sunday, being only 24- hours away from this port. It is said that the owners of the Tongariro intend building another steamer drawing 18 inches less water than the Tongariro, so that she could run in here at any time, without waiting for spring tides. AVo would draw the attention of the settlers of Hawera, Alauutahi, and Kakaramoa to the meetings called by Air Sherwood, At.P.C. rz provincial (natters, and the commencement of a seel ion of railway in this district. Dates of the meetings will be seen >y reference to our advertising columns. Monday last being tire anniversary of the birth of Her Majesty Queen Victoria, was partly kept as a holiday ; but the townspeople could not get away to (be sports advertised to be held in other parts of the district, in consequence of the inclement •state of the weather, which no doubt seriously interfered with any out-door amusements. A meeting of t he committee of the Patea Cricket Club was hold at the Albion Hotel on Saturday evening last, to receive tenders for forming and fencing the now cricket ground, The secretary handed in •six tenders. Air Delamorc’s was accepted for the supply of posts, and Air D. Wilson’s for fencing, ploughing, ckc. ; one month being the limit fixed for the completion of the job. The secretary reported that nearly £3O had been promised in subscriptions, and it was decided to get in the money wiihont delay. The matter has been taken energetically in hand by our cricketers, and there is every chance that next season Carlyle will be able to boast of a really good cricket ground, and one on which players will be aide to wield (he willow without such danger of getting broken shins or black eyes, which lias been the case during the past season, owing to the roughness of the old ground. AVe hope next season to see teams from AVangauni and New Plymouth to compete with our local cricketers, when we trust tiny will prove themselves no mean foe to contend against. By a notice elsewhere, it will be seen that Air E. 11. Alorgan has been appointed to sue for unpaid rales for the 25th road district. About the time.the first ploughing match was to ho held in the district last year, a request was made to the General Government to grant a sum of money to bo competed for by natives residing in the district. The government agreed with the request, and granted a sum of £2O to be competed for ; but in consequence of the reply not being received until after the European ploughing match was over, no action was taken. As wo look forward to see annual ploughing matches become established in the district; and as no doubt steps will shortly be talon to arrange for tho second annual match, it would bo advisable to renew (lie request, asking the Government to grant a similar sum this year for the purpose of encouraging the natives in agricultural pursuits. AVc understand that AV. Wilson, Esq., of AVhcnukura, is willing to give a donation of £5 towards the fund to provide prizes for the next competition if the match is laid uii his pi'i'i'Ol ; .V- .
