PUBLIC WORKS.
the editor oe the patea mail. Siu, —I see by your last issue that Mr 0. Carrington, tin; officer in charge of public works in this district, but wlio, I presume, generally finds enough work at the Now Plymouth end to keep him employed, made a sort of flying visit to this cud last wook. 1 am led to believe that tenders will be immediately called for to gravid that portion of the main road through the Sand Hills, near Carlyle; and that the time for receiving tenders for gravelling the road between llawera will be extended for one month longer, there having been no tenders sent in when called for lately. This is only what might be expected. There fire still some persons left in the district who arc able to carry out a contract, and no doubt would tender if any other person had the management of the works, but Who will have nothing to do with contracts at any price under Mr Carrington. Thu formation of the road between llawera and Ketcmarac having been delayed till lately, instead of being dime during the summer months, will be a serious inconvenience to settlers residing in that part of the district. Even at the present time, just after a few days rain, the road is nearly impassable. When the Government decided upon forming the main road throngh Carlyle, they took the supervision of the work out of Mr Carrington’s hands, and placed it, in Mr Hales’. It would no doubt have been a wise, thing to have asked the Government in the petition lately scut (re road through Sand Hills), to appoint the gentleman w ho is in charge of road works south of Patea to see that this particular piece of work was properly carried out. Then, if the}' aceccded to the request, no doubt there would be tenders sent in for the completion of the work ; for I am afraid no one will tender for the work under the present management. No doubt we have to thank Major Atkinson and Mr Kelly for the prompt action that lias been taken in ordering Mr Carrington to call for tenders, after tile expression of public feeling displayed at the meeting lately held at Manutahi. Hoping you will soon be able to chronicle the fact that the Government have placed some other person in charge of public works in this district, I remain, &c., PROGRESS.
