PETITION TO MAJOR ATKINSON.

The, following reply re the petition sent to tlie Hon Major Atkinson, in reference to the construction of a road between Oika and Kakaramca, has been handed to us for publication Wellington, May 11, 1875. Gentlemen, —I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of year memorial praying for the construction of a road between Oika and Kakaramea. Immediately upon its reaching me in Dunedin, on the 10th April, I sent it to the Minister of Public Works, who was then in Christchurch. lie forwarded it in due course for the report of the District Engineer, and it lias only been returned to me this morning with the final decision of the Hon Mr Richardson. The delay which has occurred in replying to your petition has arisen, as yon will sec, not from any want of attention on my part to the interests of my constituents, but from my absence in the Smith, and from the necessary routine of the Public Works Department. I regret to say that the Minister for Public Works, while anxious to promote the advancement of the district, informs me that he has no money at his disposal applicable to the proposed works, the North Island Road Fund being exhausted.
