A meeting of tlio members of the Patca Cricket Oral) way held at tiic Albion Hot-.-on Tuesday evening last. Mr G. Vv. Williams having been voted to the chair, called upon the .secretary (Mr Baggett) to read his report, which showed, after payment ol: all liabilities, a balance in hand of Is 4il After the report was adopted, a vote of thanks to the retiring secretary for his past services was carried unanimously. It was agreed that the annual meeting of the club should take place on the Ist May in each year. Mr Tcnnent was elected lion secretary and treasurer for the ensuing year. The following gentlemen were appointed as the committee of management :—Messrs Fraser, McKay, Taplin, G. W. A resolution was passed increasing the annual subscrip * tion from 5s to 10s; and in order to get (he cricket reserve of live acres fenced in and laid down in grass, it was decided to open a subscription list, and any person subscribing £1 should be an honorary member of the club for the ensuing year. Mr 0. Carrington was in Carlyle on Wednesday last, having come to examine the Sand Hills previous to preparing specifications for a fresh contract. We understand that tenders will be issued almost immediately. It is to bo hoped the Minister of Immigration will soon bo able to send this district a batch of at least sixty immigrants, who would readily find employment if they arc of the right sort, viz., persons willing to work. We understand the Immigration Officer here is having const ant enquires for labour, but is unable to satisfy the demand. The reading room in connection with the Patca Library and Institute was opened for the first time on Wednesday evening last, in one of the largo rooms in the Immigration Barracks, which will be used by permission for a short time. During Thursday last, two members of the committee canvassed the town for donations of books to form the uouclus of the library, and succeeded in obtaining about 40 volumns. Subscribers are also responding to Hie call for the half-year's subscription in advance. It is to be hoped Hurt the interest now evinced will not abate, but that renewed energy will be used towards making this a permanent, institution in the town. We adso trust that the committee will bo able to provide during (ho winter evenings, say once a fortnight, an entertainment, consisting of readings, recitations &c., which would form amusement for the public, and no doubt increase the funds of the society. At the B.M. Court yesterday (before Major Turner, 8.M.), Ernke, a Waitotara native, was 'charged by Mr James Biddle with stealing a wether hogget. The prosecutor in this case is the person who has had such trouble with the natives in trying to keep possession of his land, which the natives claim, and who arc now living on a portion of it, Mr Biddle stated in Court that during the last few months he had lost over 400 sheep through the natives and their dogs. We trust the Government Avill at once take steps to sot litis matter right. The hearing of the case was adjourned till Monday next, 17th instant, for the evidence of Mrs Riddle,
