IMMIGRATON.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE TATEA MAIL. Sir, —I was under the impression that ft continuous stream of immigration was to bo kept up to this district, and our energetic member, the lion. Major Atkinson, lias had a large and commodious barracks erected in Carlyle an a dep6t; and cottages for married couples have been put up iu Carlyle, Manntahi, and Hawcra, where no house accommodation could be afforded them, so that ample provision lias been made for the immigrants on arrival ; eontracts have also been entered into for the supply of rations, firewood, &c. But instead of the buildings being turned to their proper use, I see by your last Wednesday’s issue, in a letter signed “ Industry,” that the I (arracks are Used by a fejv gentlemen to hold private and select ]taffies in, and for that purpose has been used by them more than once ; and upon taking up Saturday’s issue I find that “ By the kind permission of Captain Wray,” ft part of the barracks lias been turned into a Good Templar Lodge. It is to be Imped that the “ Good Templars” will not inany way inconvenience the “ select parties,’” and that measures will be taken to prevent immigrants interfering with either. I am, &c., SETTLER. flf the Government fail in applying the Bar- 1 racks to their legitimate use, w t o can see no possible harm in the Good Templars or any social gathering, obtaining the services of the building so' long as they remain in their present unoccupied condition. It is to be hoped that the Government will lose no time in for-, warding us some occupants for the barracks, as we believe the district is capable of absorbing a large number of useful immigrants.—Ed. 1\ M.]
