Tenders are being called for the purchase of the Saro Windhover flying boat, which was imported by Dominion Airlines, Ltd., now in liquidation, i n December last, and which has been lying at Hobsonville, Auckland, ever since. After being'housed in a shed in the Auckland central wharf for a month after its arrival, the machine was stored in the Hobsonville air base, where it is at present. A six-seater machine, built by the well-known firm of Saunders-Roe, it was brought to New Zealand to be used‘in the Nelson-Wel-lington air service, which never materialised. Tenders close with the liquidator on Julv 17. The flying boat is a threeengined_machine, and it cost some thousands of pounds. Golden scale and green aphis are gaining ground rapidly on British oak and silver birch trees in the reserves in Christchurch. “ The diseases are very thick' in the birch and oak trees in Victoria square and Sydenham Park,” said the superintendent of city parks, Mr M. J. Barnett. Growth was being stunted, and in time the trees themselves must be seriously affected, said Mr Barnett. An insect named Habrolepis dalmani had been liberated in the Domain to control the golden scale, but this could have no effect on the other pest. With a good spraying machine they, could cope with almost all insect pests; but at present there was no suitable equipment.
