UNEMPLOYED EX-SOLDIERS
THE No. 5 SCHEME BOARD’S ATTITUDE CRITICISED. WELLINGTON, June 23. Criticism of the Unemployment Board’s attitude with reference to returned soldiers was made at the Returned Soldiers’ Conference. Mr Lloyd, of Christchurch, said it had been laid down that single men in receipt of a war pension of £1 a week were not entitled to receive employment under the relief scheme. The position was that those men could not get two days’ work a week; yet they had to pay the levy of seven and sixpence a quarter. The only person exempt from the levy was the pensioner permanently disabled and in receipt of a full pension. A pensioner could make application for relief from payment, but it was doubtful if it would be granted. If it were the applicant would not be entitled to any work at all.
