WELLINGTON: June 26. The weather most fortunately cleared up quite satisfactorily for the opening of Parliament. Wellington was actually treated to an hour or two of sunshine, which brightened up the preparations, and must have been most gratifying to all those who have to stand about outside for several hours on these State occasions. The galleries, as usual, were crowded hours (almost) before the ceremony took place, and there was the usual rush to the Lower House afterwards to listen eagerly to the storm of questions and requests for leave of absence from those who could not make it convenient to be present at the outset of- the parliamentary fray. Her Excellency was charmingly dressed in a frock of palest greenyblue embossed chiffon velvet, with a short coat edged with white fur fox, a deep collar of the same being worn. Her

toque was exactly to tone, with silver embroideries and a diamond brooch in the front. The bouquet presented to her w’a« of rose and blue orchids and fuchsias, tied with ribbons to tone. Among the ladies on the floor- of the House were Mrs Forbes, in a frock of honey-coloured lace over georgette, with fur trimming, and a black upturned hat. Her bouquet was of yellow and brown orchids, carnations, and autumn-tinted leaves, tied with hennacoloured ribbon. The other ladies included Lady Carncross, Lady Myers, Lady Statham, Lady Sidey, Mesdames Veitch. Masters, Murdoch, Coates, Cobbe, S. G. Smith, and Ransom. Among others in the gallery were the Mayor (Mr T. Hislop) and Mrs Hislop, members of the Consular offices, including Mr and Mrs Hitch and Mr and Mrs Dye (America), Mr and Mrs Nihotte (Belgium), Mr and Mrs F. Dyer (Greece), Mr Paish (British Trade Commissioner) and Mrs Paish; Mr J. Foster (Canadian Commissioner) and Mrs Foster, and the wives of many Government officials, as well as “ parliamentary ladies.” A reception was given in old Parliament House after the opening by the Prime Minister and Mrs Forbes, at which it was calculated nearly a thousand people were present. Certainly .this function grows each year in while the wails of ■ the reception room do not extend in sympathy. However, it was a very pleasant party, the tables being brightly decorated with chrysanthemums, the vice-regal table being most tastefully arranged with yellow poppies and mauve irises in low glass bowls. Their Excellencies returned later with their party, Lady Bledisloe wearing an ensemble of lettuce green, with deep trimming of fur, her close-fitting hat being of the same tone. An orchestra discoursed very delightful music during the afternoon, and songs were given by .Mr Herbert Wood, Miss Hilda Chudley, and a recitation was given by Miss Jessie Forbes. A recent wedding of interest was that of Mr Laurence Sigurd Andersen, son of Mr and Mrs J. C. Andersen, of Kelburn. Wellington, and Miss Kathleen E. Wilson, of Wellington. The ceremony took place at St. Andrew’s Church, and the Rev. R. Howie officiated. The church was tastefully decorated with hydrangeas and foliage, and little clusters of white flowers, tied with white ribbon, were at the ends of the seats reserved for guests. The bride was in a dainty ivory-white gown of fine French lace, and the wedding veil of embroidered net formed the train. It was.fastened to the head with flat roses of chiffon and small orange blossom buds. he r bouquet being of white roses and heather. The bride was escorted by her brother. The bridesmaids, the Misses Wilson and Hollis, were in charming frocks of coral pink, with turbans and bouquets to tone, and a small flower-girl, Woodsie Maclean,, was dressed to match, and carried a gilded basket of flowers. The best man was Mr Gifford Moore, and the groomsman, Mr Maurice Hawken. The wedding reception was held at Kelburn Kiosk, where the decorations were in coral tones, with the addition of two white wedding bells, which were most effective. Speeches were made, and a veryhappy time spent, and the evening closed with dancing. When Mr and Mrs Sigurd Andersen left by car for their tour, the bride was wearing a brown tweed ensemble, a small brown hat, and furs to tone.

There was a large attendance, and the guests all had a most cheerful evening. The decorations were in tones of green and yellow, with festoons and streamers, and delightful bush foliage, with shaded lanterns over the lights. Alasks, and paper hats and caps were handed out by “ pedlars,” who did a good trade, and altogether the local branch of the Plunket Society should benefit substantially by the effort. Costume dances were given by pupils of Airs Squires, and a demonstration was given by some of the semi-finalists of the New Zealand dancing championship, which is being held at present. The delicious home-made supper was in charge of Alesdames Richards and Alather, while the general organisation was done by Airs Jowett. Toe H, under Mr K. Reid, also gave much assistance. The grand inarch took place about half-past 9, and under the shaded lights the scene was a most spectacular one. The officers of the society present were Dr E. B.
